Author's Description:
Susan Kulkarni is a London-based designer who has been has been designing
and creating for over ten years. With her family roots in both London and
India she bridges the divide between East and West through her use of
colour and idiosyncratic style. Throughout her life she has been
fascinated by design and detail.
Susan read English at Oxford University and on graduation was awarded the
Edith Horseman Travelling Fellowship from her college to study fashion and
costume around the world. Her travels confirmed to her that her future was
in design, and she returned to do a post-graduate costume qualification at
the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London. From there her work
has gone from strength to strength. She has designed for television, film,
theatre, fashion and styled shoots for MTV.
Recently Susan’s creations have been featured on the cover of ‘Aspect
County’ magazine. Her hats and fascinators are stocked in London outlets
and many have been sported at Ascot Races and other high-end events. Last
year the BBC filmed a documentary following her work while she was Costume
Designing a play for the National Theatre.
Susan is currently Head of Costume for Future Cinema and Secret Cinema.
She designs and makes for their productions and film premieres, creating
interactive cinematic experiences where costumed actors bring films to
life.
Susan also worked at Laban Contemporary Dance Conservatoire where she
designed and made a huge array of clothing for dancers: her designs not
only look glamorous on the stage but also suit the highly demanding
movements of the dancers.
